1978

1st Bn The Royal Green Jackets

We entered for the ‘Hong Kong Bisley’ and although performing creditably enough in view of the lack of practice time and strange conditions, we were well beaten by very professional rifle teams of the Gurkha Battalions. Not to be daunted, Major Bob Gutteridge set out to motivate a volunteer team to go home to England by various devious means in order to compete at Bisley, which he succeeded in doing, achieving a result good enough to keep interest in competition shooting alive in the Battalion.

2nd Bn The Royal Green Jackets

Due to commitments in Tidworth and the move to Cyprus we were unable to enter a team for Bisley.

Warrant Officers and Sergeants held their annual Rifle Meeting to determine the winner of the Kennedy Trophy for the best shot and the Wooden Spoon for the worst. The former was won by Sgt Manning and the latter wishes to remain anonymous but word leaked out that he worked in the rations store.

3rd Bn The Royal Green Jackets

Having Northern Ireland meant Bisley would have to be a miss this year. Northern Skill at Arms. the Battalion did well.

4th (Volunteer) Battalion

The Shooting Team competed again at Bisley and again, despite an intense training programme which included for the first time a pre-Bisley concentration at Winchester, the results were disappointing. Our major success was an individual one, with Rfn Smythe of ‘C’ Company winning a cup for the best Young Soldier.

Our March and Shoot Competition was again won by 2 platoon ‘A’ Company.

The Rifle Depot

The Depot Team again won the Minor Units Championship at Bisley, the team consisted of W02 Stanger, C/Sgt Notley, Cpls Gibbon and Tyson.

Besides winning the Minor Units Championship they won:-

Two teams represented the Battalion at The Cadet Inter-Service Shoot at Bisley giving a very good account of themselves. Cadet Sgt Shewry being the ninth best shot in the Cadet Hundred.

The Buckinghamshire Cadet Battalion
Royal Green Jackets

Following an excellent Battalion Shoot organised by our Shooting Officer, Major Dougie Coleman, on the Buckinghamshire Small-Bore Rifle Morris Range, we were able to put three Cadet Teams and one Adult Team into the South-East District Skill at Arms Meeting.
