1st Bn The Royal Green Jackets

A team was entered in the Hong Kong Small Arms Meeting. The team under Major Bob Gutteridge and W02 Crook did very well against the Gurkhas. The most encouraging being Rfn McGreechan who was the best S.M.G. Young Soldier. Another Young Soldier Rfn Smith19, who subsequently went onto Bisley. There he came 91st in the Army Hundred (entries 620) and second in the Young Soldier Cup.

2nd Bn The Royal Green Jackets

Due to Northern Ireland commitments it was not possible to compete in any shooting competition.

3rd Bn The Royal Green Jackets

We sent a team the Bisley with Jeremy Knight as Team Captain which, after an absence of three years from competition shooting, did commendably well.

In the competitive world, we developed an annoying habit of coming second in most events we entered, such as Isedsam, London District Orienteering, Courage Trophy and then third at Bisley.

On a cold and snowy day in February the seeds for Bisley were sown when Junior Rifleman’s Company held a shooting competition from which the boys from Baker Section and the permanent staff team were selected. As far as the boy’s team were concerned the original selection order of merit changed very little over the next four and a half months, proving the old adage that you can only make a good shot a better one. The first test came in South East District Skill at Arms Meeting where the adult team, competing as a Minor Unit and comprising C/Sgt Notley, Sgt Lloyd, Cpl Connolly and Cpl Tyson, collected the usual amount of silver and romped home as:
